C.G. Jung utilized the stages of the Alchemical process to illustrate the transformative progression in psychotherapy. The "Coniunctio" represents the joining of the opposites in the psyche, symbolized by the male and female elements.

Alchemy addresses the forging of gold from base metals, the transformation of matter into spirit via a reconciliation of the opposites, depicted by the hermaphrodite, symbolizing infusing matter with spirit and vice-versa.

Here is another Alchemical depiction of the union or "Sacred Marriage" of the opposites, thus resulting in enlightenment or what Jung called, "Individuation.

The uroboros or serpent swallowing his own tail symbolizes the eternal process and cycle of birth, death, and rebirth; A continual renewal and oneness.

Here is an Alchemist tending his furnace or "vas", the container where, under heat and pressure, base metals were to be turned into gold. This "vas" is a symbol often used to depict the containing aspect of the therapeutic holding space.

The mandala is a symbol of balance and wholeness, often used to depict the ideal and desired state of soul/psyche by artists and many religious traditions. Jung created many and stated that contemplation of Mandalas helped to calm and center him while he was undergoing his own psycho/spiritual crisis and journey.
